Until a few years ago, I had a demanding career as a primary school teacher. I was working full-time, spending evenings marking books and weekends planning lessons, and I was trying to balance that with bringing up my own blended family and caring for my mum and her advancing Alzheimer’s Disease. The demands were already unsustainable but my perimenopausal symptoms made it impossible to cope. I burnt out.

That’s when I set out on my own health journey. Although I’d always been active, I really began to learn about the impact of movement on the body and the mind, about how our nutrition is so fundamentally important to our health, about how oestrogen depletion affects every system in our body, about how adequate sleep and relaxation techniques are essential for our wellbeing.

At 59, I have more energy and am stronger that at any other point in my life. I lead an active healthy lifestyle and I want to keep doing all the things I enjoy now long into old age. I try and do all the right things. I eat well, exercise daily, set good parameters for a healthy sleep pattern and try to reduce the stress in my life. But its hard!

It’s why I decided to train as a health coach. To find a way to help other women on the same journey. To try and make sure that we’re all enjoying living our best lives for as long as we possibly can!

Welcome to Chrysalis Health Coaching. My name is Jan and I’m a health coach based in West Yorkshire. I work with women of all ages but particularly those in midlife who are struggling with energy slumps, exhaustion, weight gain, cravings and want to find a way to get back on top of their lives.

Maybe you know that you need to improve your diet, but don’t know where to start? Perhaps you’re worried about declining muscle and bone density as you cope with menopause? Or maybe you’re so stressed balancing a demanding job and caring responsibilities that you don’t have the time or the headspace to prioritise your own health? With so much conflicting advice out there, you can be left floundering. What sort of lifestyle, exercise routine or dietary pattern will work best for you when there is so much to choose from? That’s where I can help you.

I will help you clarify where you want to be, help you understand why you’ve been struggling, and help you identify what you want to change. The pace is determined by you and designed to fit within your busy schedule.

Your journey starts with a complimentary 30 minute online chat. We’ll find out a little more about what you want to achieve and whether we’ll be a good fit. There is no obligation to take it any further at that stage, but if you do decide to carry on, I’ll ask you to complete a full health profile and I’ll work out a bespoke but flexible programme for a further six sessions. Each session will be at least an hour long, and the first one is at least an hour and a half. We’ll find a regular time slot that fits in with you, your work and home life. You’ll leave each coaching session feeling motivated by your goals, committed to your actions, and with a clear plan for the week ahead.

Plans are now in place to introduce other strength work and different fun activities which can be shared. I now feel far more able to consider my own needs first without feeling so guilty!

Jan and I met in person and any initial apprehensions at what to expect were quickly dispelled by her friendly manner and calm, confident approach. Jan offered plenty of guidance and suggestions as we worked through the coaching tools.  Between sessions she encouraged me to let her know how I’d got on with agreed actions, acting as a sort of accountability buddy.  She also sent me a link for an interview on a topic relevant to one of my goals. This I found especially eye opening and helpful, the advice of which I have now put into practice.
